A suicide bomber, who disguised as a commuter in a motor park in Potiskum, Yobe State’s commercial nerve-centre has detonated explosive devices, killing at least five people and injuring 35.
The bomber reportedly boarded a Golf car at Bulala Motor Park along Jos Road in the town yesterday at about 9.45a.m. “He pretended as if he was a passenger and boarded a commercial car,” a resident told Daily Sun on phone.
He said the suicide bomber boarded the car while the commercial driver was a few metres away calling passengers. “The bomb just went off from the bomber in the car. The bomber and five others died,” he said.
Sources at the Potiskum General Hospital confirmed that five dead bodies were deposited at the hospital mortuary, adding that 36 injured persons were admitted.
“Nine out of these injured person have been referred to Federal Medical Centre, Azare (Bauchi State) for further treatment,” another source added.
The source said some of the injured persons, who did not sustain severe injuries might be discharged soon. There were no reactions from either the police or military task force in the state at press time.
Boko Haram has intensified bomb attacks on Potiskum, about 120 kilometres from Damaturu, the Yobe capital this year. Recently, two female suicide bombers detonated explosive devices at a GSM accessories market in the town, killing no fewer than seven people.
A blast in a police station suspected to have been embedded in a car by a Boko Haram bomber also killed two policemen few hours after the driver of the bomb-laden car was apprehended by the police.
