Arsene Wenger willing to spend €40m on Arsenal’s next marquee signing

Arsenal are to aim to make Porto and Colombia striker Jackson Martinez their summer marquee signing in a move worth €40million (£29m) in transfer fees, according to the Metro.

Jackson Martinez, 28, has done the rounds in rumour mills across Europe for quite some time now, with Arsenal having been one of the main contenders for his signature according to many reports.

However, although the Colombian striker has been on their radar for some time, fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur were in talks with him last summer, according to the Metro.

But it now seems that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is ready to re-enter negotiations for the Colombian striker, who has scored 25 goals in 29 games in all competitions this season.

Martinez’s goal record at Porto has set him apart from the rest of the strikers in the league and has seen his name up in lights across Europe for a long time now.

He has scored 62 goals in 80 Portuguese league games for Porto and he is on course for his best goal-scoring season after hitting 29 last season and 31 the year before.

And despite having Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez, Danny Welbeck and Lukas Podolski all on the books at Arsenal, the Metro claim that Wenger still wants to add more quality in the attacking department with the addition of Martinez.

They claim also he will make a bid in the region of £29.5 million for the Colombian, who scored five goals in six Champions League group games this season.
