Aston Villa 1-2 Chelsea: Ivanovic goal extends Chelsea’s lead in the title-race

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic won the game for the Blues in the second-half, as the title-contenders piled the misery onto Aston Villa at Villa Park, reports BBC Sport.

Eden Hazard put the Londoners ahead inside of 10 minutes following a swift attacking move that effectively cut through the Aston Villa defence. The Belgian swept home a Willian pass to set the Premier League leaders on their way early on.

Minutes after the break, Aston Villa came back through Jores Okore to end their goal drought. Winger Carles Gil worked a move from a corner, and whipped in a ball for the onrushing defender to level the game.

But Aston Villa struggled to keep the Blues at bay after equalising, and eventually their resistance crumbled. Paul Lambert’s side failed to clear their lines, and Branislav Ivanovic volleyed home from inside the area.

The home side boasted an unbeaten record against Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho prior to the meeting, but were undone by lapses in concentration.
