Cassim asked to investigate Nxasana’s violence charges

JOHANNESBURG – President Jacob Zuma has asked the Cassim Inquiry investigating National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) head, Mxolisi Nxasana, to investigate his criminal charges for acts of violence.

Zuma announced on Thursday night that advocate Nazeer Cassim would lead the inquiry into whether Nxasana was fit for his office.

He announced the inquiry six months ago after it emerged the NPA head had failed to disclose he’d been charged and then acquitted of murder.

In the terms of reference that were released last night, the president asks Cassim to make findings on whether the criminal charges Nxasana faced are consonant with being NPA head.

He then goes on to ask Cassim to also investigate whether Nxasna issued media statements that could bring the prosecuting authority into disrepute.

It’s not known at this stage which media statements he could be referring to or why Zuma wants that particular issue probed.

The president has asked Cassim to finish his inquiry six weeks after it starts and to issue a report two weeks after that.
