Cesc brings Chelsea closer to title with last-minute goal

Chelsea v Liverpool

Spain’s Cesc Fabregas, wearing a black facemask to protect his broken nose, scored the only goal just two minutes before the end of regulation time in a hardfought match to give the win to Chelsea over the Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road and taking Jose Mourinho’s squad one big step closer to the English Premier League championship.

Although the home squad held the line against the league leaders until the very last, the winning shot – Chelsea’s only really good shot-on-goal of the match – came on a blast from Cesc from within the box on a centering pass by Belgium’s Eden Hazard, putting the “Blues” up by seven points over Arsenal with a game in hand.

Chelsea found itself struggling during the match, largely a minuet of maneuver rather than exciting sallies or shots-on-goal, and sorely missed the presence of strikers Diego Costa and Loic Remy.

QPR – despite a valiant effort that kept their rivals at bay until the very last moments and produced more shots on goal, albeit fruitless ones, than Chelsea – remains two points into the relegation zone.

With the win, it’s Chelsea with 73 points – virtually sewing up the Premier League title race – to Arsenal’s 66. Manchester United, at present, has 62 to Manchester City’s 61, with Southhampton far back at 56 and Liverpool and Tottenham tied at 54 points.
