EACC arrests suspended GDC boss, tender committee over corruption claims

EACC officers arrested the suspended GDC managing director, acting CEO and tender committee members over corruption allegations on Monday morning.

Suspended MD Silas Simiyu, acting chief executive Godwin Mwawongo and tender committee members Abraham Saat, Peter Ayodo, Caleb Mbayi, Bruno Mugambi and Nicholas Karume were arrested at their homes.

Company secretary Praxidis Saisi was also among the employees arrested over allegations they irregularly procured rig-moving services from Bonfide Clearing and Forwarding in the 2012/13 financial year.

They will be grilled and arraigned in court if found culpable; DPP Keriako Tobiko had directed that they be charged with criminal offences as recommended by the EACC.

Simiyu is on suspension as he was named among senior government officials on the list of shame President Uhuru Kenyatta presented to Parliament in March.

The report says GDC “had never advertised nor was there any open tender for the supply of two rigs” as was the case in the procurement of previous rigs.

On November 4, the GDC board suspended the acting CEO, secretary and the tender committee members to pave way for investigations following the recommendations to the DPP.

The board said it based its decision on the commission’s advise that the seven employees be surcharged and face criminal prosecution.
