Preston have called in extra security after Sir Alex Ferguson announced he was travelling to their FA Cup fifth round tie with Manchester United on Monday evening.

It will be Ferguson’s first trip to Deepdale since his son, Darren, was removed as Preston boss in 2010.

The League One outfit fear some fans may try to confront the legendary Scot after he recalled two loan players from North End – Ritchie de Laet and Josh King – just days after the sacking.

They were relegated from the Championship at the end of that campaign and have been stuck in the third-tier of English football ever since.

It is believed Preston have increased security around the directors’ box, while Lancashire Police have categorised the game as a Class C fixture – the highest rating possible.
