Germany ousted the United States women’s national team from the top spot in FIFA’s latest Women’s World Ranking, the world soccer governing body announced early on Friday.
This marks the first time the United States has not been ranked No. 1 since March 2008. Impressive victories against Sweden and England helped Die Nationalelf claim the top seat for the first time in seven years.
The next Women’s World Ranking will be published on March 27.
The Americans lost to Brazil (8th)) last week and drew China (13th) during the 2014 International Tournament of Brasilia, a four-team competition held at at the National Stadium Mane Garrincha that serves as preparation for the 2015 World Cup in Canada.
On Thursday, USA routed Argentina 7-0 in the Brasilia Tournament, securing its place in the final of the four-team competition against host Brazil. A draw would have eliminated the Americans.
France also moved up one spot to No. 3 in the rankings, while defending World Cup champion Japan dropped to No. 4. European power Sweden remained in the fifth spot. England, North Korea, Brazil, Canada and Australia round up the top 10.
