NAIROBI Senator Mike Sonko yesterday denied claims that he is a drug baron. “I have never, I’m not and will never be a drug baron. Those peddling that cheap propaganda should produce the evidence or shut up. I can account for all my money. I buy and sell land and I can prove that anywhere,” said the flamboyant Senator.
Sonko was reacting to remarks made by Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero to the effect that some people were purporting to run a parallel government to his administration from drug proceeds. Kidero named no names. “Nairobi is the centre of dug trafficking. People have been named to be involved in drugs and no action has been taken against them,” Kidero said, after attending a church service at AIC Milimani on Sunday.
“Where drug cartels fight, they tend to get into positions of authority. This happened in Jamaica, Cuba and even in Colombia. Any services given must be given within the confines and provisions of the law,” Kidero said. The governor noted that drug trafficking poses a serious danger to the future generations if the city is not weeded of barons.
Sonko has been providing a wide range of services for city residents, including free ambulance evacuation, fire response and wedding limousines. It is understood that Sonko is now planning to start repairing estate roads in parts of Nairobi where they have gone without maintenance for decades. Yesterday, a furious Sonko dismissed Kidero’s allegations, accusing the governor of diverting attention. “Kidero has been unable to provide services to the people of Nairobi and is trying to divert attention from allegations that he brought Mumias Sugar down.
“He is jealous that I have been able to help the people of Nairobi better than him. I will not stop helping out people today – in fact, very soon, we will start fixing estate roads so that Nairobians stop suffering,” said Sonko. Accusing Kidero of practicing Old School politics, Sonko explained that once a documentary of his aired on local TV stations, several companies decided to join him by donating water bowsers and other items.
“Express Kenya, Mohammed Jaffer of Grain Bulk, Buscar, Crescent Construction and Bachu Body Builders have all donated water bowsers to Sonko Rescue Team. If I were doing drugs, would these reputable companies donate to what I am doing? “Helping people is in my blood. I’m not about to stop,” said Sonko.
