THE African elephant risks being extinct by 2025 if urgent action is not taken, an animal trust has said.
David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust said it is estimated that one elephant is killed every 15 minutes as a result of Asia’s demand for ivory.
Climate change, habitat degradation and loss, forest depletion and tourism market volatility are challenges facing conservation.
Others are wildlife crime and human-wildlife conflict brought by population growth and changing land use habits by communities that co-exist with wildlife.
The trust released a monthly report on illegal wildlife crimes.
The report says there was an increase in illegal activities in March.
Some 12 bush-meat poachers were arrested in the Chyulu Hills National Park, the report says.
