Kenya Wildlife Service lowers academic pass for recruits

Failing in national examination is not the end of life. This came true for students who failed in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.

The candidates, most of whom scored a mean grade of ‘E’ got a rare opportunity to join the Kenya Wildlife Service ( KWS) as rangers. KWS is conducting a nationwide recruitment exercise.

“The recruitment exercise, which is being done at no cost, will enable us beef up our personnel to enhance capacity in combating wildlife challenges,” said KWS Director General William Kiprono.

This year, the KWS requires a maximum grade of D+ (plus) and a minimum of E in the national exam. The decision to lower the cut-off grades was meant to offer jobs to those who may never get an opportunity to further their studies because of the low grades attained. Hundreds of youths with above D+ grades were a disappointed lot as they were turned away.

The service is seeking to recruit more than 600 rangers across the country in the process, which will see an average of 13 candidates aged between 18 and 25 years recruited in each of the 47 counties.
