All vehicles belonging to the Sonko Rescue Team will be impounded, Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has said.
Kidero said the team operates the vehicles without valid licenses and that “as far as I know” they are not registered.
He said its ambulances must be listed with the Health ministry and county’s health department, and fire engines with the county government.
“The services being offered by the team should be registered so that we know whether they meet the standards provided by the government,” he added.
He spoke during a fundraising ceremony at Dagoretti High School on Friday.
“Ambulances must be registered as per the law. People need to operate within the law. The ones that MPs talked about will be clamped down,” he said.
The crowd however booed at Kidero saying the needy benefit from the initiative by Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko.
Dagoretti South MP Dennis Kariuki said Sonko is being “pretentious” and is offering services that should be left to the governor.
When sought for comment, Sonko accused Kidero of engineering the downfall of the rescue team.
He alleged that county officials recently hired goons to beat Benjamin Odhiambo, a former Kidero supporter, for leaking information about grounding some of his vehicles.
“Benjamin told me that the county government officers were unhappy with my ambulances and hearses. They paid some of my drivers to put salt into the vehicle engines so that they are grounded,” he said.
“They had also paid Joyce Akinyi Chinedu to avail drugs to be put in one of my ambulances. Akinyi was arrested an is in jail now.”
The Star could not confirm the allegations leveled against Akinyi.
Sonko said he has bought a new fleet of vehicles to replace the grounded ones.
He launched the team in January to offer various services to Nairobi residents.
Its entourage includes a Land Cruiser, Limousine, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and a Hammer.
Ambulance, hearse, breakdown, wedding transport, water, security and emergency response are some of the services offered.
