The Lipala: Kenyan folk dance makes a comeback

A traditional Kenyan dance is pushing to claim a spot in the country’s dance clubs thanks to Sauti Sol, one of the hottest bands in the African country, the BBC reported.

The Lipala has already made an appearance in Sauti Sol’s new video of their new single “Sura Yako,” and the BBC reports it has been a big hit.

“It’s been a while since Kenyans have had a dance,” singer Willis Chimano told the BBC.

“In my younger years we used to have the helicopter dance and the cuckoo dance – those moves were there in the clubs and everyone was doing them.”

As certain dance moves made their way to all corners of the world, including Kenya, thanks to the Internet, Sauti Sol found it boring.

“We never had access to those music videos and that’s why we came up with phenomenal dance styles,” band member Bien-Aime Baraza said.

The Lipala is more common to the country’s rural weddings rather than the city’s night clubs.

We never had access to those music videos and that’s why we came up with phenomenal dance styles,” says band member Bien-Aime Baraza.

“What we need to do is take back our dance, take back the streets,” Baraza said.
