Police officials in Chapel Hill, N.C., said Wednesday that a man had been arrested in the shooting deaths of three people at a condominium complex east of the campus of the University of North Carolina.
The Chapel Hill police said that Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, had been charged with three counts of first-degree murder. He is being held at the Durham County Jail.
The victims were identified as Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, of Chapel Hill; his wife, Yusor Mohammad, 21; and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, of Raleigh.
The police statement said that the shooting occurred around 5 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Summerwalk Circle in Chapel Hill. All three people were pronounced dead at the scene, the police said.
The University of North Carolina said in a statement that Mr. Baraka was a second-year student in the School of Dentistry, and that Yusor, his wife, had planned to begin her dental studies in the fall. Ms. Abu-Salha was identified as Ms. Mohammad’s sister and a student at North Carolina State University.
The police said the investigation was continuing.
