‘No ID, No Alcohol’ from now on

MUTUTHO

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 13 – The National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has launched a campaign dubbed ‘No ID, No Sale’ meant to ensure alcohol is sold to people above 18 years only.

The campaign to be held in partnership with Responsible Alcohol Drinks Company Association targets 35,000 outlets within Nairobi.

NACADA chairman John Mututho told journalists on Friday that the campaign is designed to empower alcohol traders to discourage the sale of alcohol to people who are below the legal drinking age.

“Under the age of 18, you only live in a dream world…there is no single drink in the world that has a single standard of how you behave when you are drunk,” he pointed out.

He warned that vendors caught selling alcohol to people below the said age will be fined Sh150,000 or jailed for 12 months.

Mututho cautioned that already, plans to arrest illegal manufacturers of alcohol and unlicensed distributors are underway.

“The information and intelligence we have is so accurate that we are now planning an attack…it does not matter where you drink at,” he warned.

“People will not wait for long… it is going to be a hit that has not been done since 1992.”

The Alcoholic Drinks Control Act, 2010, was assented to on August 13, 2010 which controls and regulates the production, manufacture, sale, labelling, promotion, sponsorship and consumption of alcoholic drinks.

The Act seeks, he stated to protect the health of individuals; protect the consumers of alcoholic drinks from misleading and deceptive inducements and protect the health of persons under the age of 18.

“If any adult wants to take alcohol in their homes, they should either get it themselves or send an ID holder. It is an offence to send a minor to purchase alcohol,” he said.

He also said the authority will enforce the directive requiring televisions to air alcohol advertisements only after 10pm.
