Johannesburg – Despite the appointment Danny Jordaan as the new executive mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality on Monday, the country’s football governing body has confirmed that Jordaan will not relinquish his position and duties at SAFA as the organisation’s president.
SAFA spokesperson Dominic Chimhavi confirmed toSport24 in an exclusive interview that the 63-year-old will continue with his duties inside the SAFA house despite his top appointment down in the Friendly City.
Chimhavi also hinted that most National Executive Committee (NEC) members are also full time employees in some parts of the country while still being involved with the SAFA duties.
“The mayoral position does not mean he relinquishes the SAFA position,” said Chimhavi.
“It is a global norm that an association president is not a full-time position.
“Most national executive committee members are full-time employees (in other professions); some as teachers, lawyers and mayors of metropolitan cities.
“The President of Madagascar FA is the minister in the current government and former FIFA vice-President, Jack Warner was PM of Trinidad and Tobago.”
Jordaan take over from Benson Fihla, with the 83-year-old Fihla been seen as “too old to effectively engage with communities” as the ANC hopes to gain support in the Eastern Cape municipality’s urban areas.
