JOHANNESBURG – A search for a missing lion in the Karoo has been called off for the day.

The three-year-old lion escaped from the Karoo National Park on Friday.

It’s believed the lion used a hole in the fence to get out.

A massive search has since been underway to track the lion.

The South African National Parks Fayrouch Ludick said, “The farmers have been very helpful [in looking for the animal].”

Earlier in the day Ludick said trackers had found the lion’s spoor, though the real work was in “keeping up with it through the mountains and ravines”.

In 2013, a hyena created a storm on social media as it roamed the streets of Johannesburg.

The animal made its way through Victory Park, Delta Park and Blairgowrie before residents and officials managed to corner it in on Olympic Road.

The animal was darted with a tranquiliser gun by zoo officials and taken to the Johannesburg Zoo hospital before being released into the wild.

In 2010, Panjo the tiger shot to fame after escaping from his owner’s bakkie and spending two days on the prowl.

He was later found wandering in the woods outside Bronkhorstspruit.
