Suspected Al shaabab returnees kill police informer in Kwale

An elderly man police say was key in the fight against radicalisation and terrorism was on Friday shot dead at Bongwe area in Diani Town of Kwale County by suspected Al-Shabaab returnees sparking fears of the return of senseless killings that hit the area last year.

Omar Salim Vumbi 59, said to be a police informer was a close friend and relative to the area assistant chief Ali Mwakubo who is recuperating at Coast General Hospital after he was shot on December 10.

His son Masoud Vumbi said that killers raided their home at around 11.30 on Thursday and opened fire and killed their father before setting the house a blaze.

Msambweni OCPD Joseph Omijah said the deceased was shot on the head and eye and died on the spot. The incident happened at around 11.30 pm when Vumbi saw smoke coming from his father’s house.

“The postmortem is being done but the motive of the shooting is not yet known,” said the police boss even as his junior police said that the deceased was a police informer.
