A teenager is in serious condition in hospital after being attacked by a hyena in South Africa’s famous Kruger National Park.

The 15-year-old boy was attacked by the animal as he was sleeping alone in a separate compartment of his parent’s tent on Sunday morning.

According to Netwerk24, the hyena locked its jaws onto the boy’s face, breaking several bones, before dragging him out of the tent.

South African National Parks spokesman William Mabasa said: “The animal attacked him on his face. He screamed and his parents woke up.

“Fortunately a nurse was there, as well as one of our guides”, he added.

The boy was treated at a local hospital, before being flown to Johannesburg for emergency plastic and reconstructive surgery to his mouth and jaw.

Local media reported his condition to be serious.

The hyena is believed to have entered the campsite through a hole in the fence.

Mabasa said the animal, which escaped, was probably looking for food. He warned: “People must be aware at all times that there are wild animals around them and they must make sure that their tents are properly closed.”
