Two Arrested Over Rape, Murder of Moi University Student

Two suspects were arrested on Monday over the rape and murder of a third-year student at Moi University.

They are being held at Eldoret police station for questioning, officers said.

“We look forward to a speedy conclusion to the investigations so that the culprits are brought to book,” VC Richard Mibei said in a statement.

He said security has been beefed up at the university.

Slain student Charity Maina was strangled by the attackers who also tore off her clothes, in the late Saturday night incident.

Her body was found near a matatu terminus next to the gate of the main campus.

Rioting students burned a police Land Cruiser that was to transport the body.

They had refused to release the body saying they would take it to the morgue using a college bus.

Hundreds of anti-riot police were deployed to the campus amid threats for more protests.

“We have been asking the police to provide adequate security for us but nothing has been done. We have had many incidents of insecurity yet police do not act,” said student leader Rolex Riziki.

Maina, who was in the School of Arts, was reportedly attacked on her way from the university to a nearby hostel.

Calm has returned to the institution.
