Rwanda appoints 29-year-old McKinstry as national team coach

KIGALI, Rwanda (AP) ” Rwanda has appointed 29-year-old Johnny McKinstry as its new national team coach.

McKinstry was named on Friday, again becoming one of the youngest coaches in international soccer. He took charge of Sierra Leone’s national team in 2013 when he was 27.

The Rwandan Football Association said the Northern Irishman was also responsible for its under-20 and under-23 teams.

Mckinstry’s first game with the senior Rwandan team is a friendly against 2012 African champion Zambia next weekend. Rwanda’s FA said he will arrive in the East African country on Sunday.

Rwanda hosts the African Nations Championship next year, the continental championship for players based in Africa.

McKinstry took Sierra Leone to its highest FIFA ranking, but he was fired after a poor run in African Cup of Nations qualifying.
