Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has ordered the closure of one hundred and fifteen firms manufacturing alcoholic beverages for failing to meet the statutory requirements.
Speaking when he received a report by the Inter-Agency Taskforce on Control of Potable Spirit and Combat of Illicit Brews, Nkaissery at the same time directed that their operating licenses be withdrawn.
The task force comprising of officers from county governments and relevant national government agencies which was tasked with undertaking inspection on all firms manufacturing alcoholic beverages across the county between 4th and 14th of August submitted its report to Nkaissery.
The task force in its recommendation found 21 manufacturing firms in compliance with the most statutory requirements, 115 manufacturing firms were recommended to close down their operations for failing to meet set standards while 41 were not traced in the registered locations.
The Interior Cabinet Secretary said the government has noted resurgence of the second generation brews in some parts of the country calling on county governments to crack the whip on illicit brewers.
Among the recommendations put forward by the task force include a proposal to have manufacturing firms prohibited from setting up shop in residential areas or within 300 metres from any nursery, primary, secondary school or any other learning institution.
