PRETORIA – Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe says Operation Fiela has been a significant success in the fight against crime and will continue into the foreseeable future.
The inter-ministerial committee on migration, led by Radebe, gave a briefing on the operation’s progress in Pretoria today.
Operation Fiela was launched in the wake of widespread xenophobic violence in April.
Radebe says the operation continues to yield positive results.
“The intelligent services continue to conduct their threat and information analysis to ensure a focused and intelligent-driven operation.”
The minister says the re-integration of displaced foreigners back into their communities has been completed.
“The last temporary shelter in Chatsworth, in Kwazulu Natal, officially closed its doors on 30 June.”
Last week, the City of Cape Town said Operation Fiela has helped clamp down on illegal activity and regulate illegal immigrants.
The city’s Wilfred Solomons-Johannes was responding to questions by Parliaments ad-hoc joint committee probing violence against foreign nationals.
Members of Parliament wanted to know what the city’s plan is to prevent future attacks.
The city presented its plan aimed at preventing xenophobic attacks and has identified hotspots including Philippi, Nyanga, Milnerton and Delft.
Solomons-Johannes said although they have received backlash from humanitarian groups about Operation Fiela, it does have its pros.
“We have seen, as a result of Operation Fiela, many illegal activities has been highlighted, many illegal immigrants that is here, that is not even documented is being dealt with through the necessary process.”
He said the city is duty bound to adopt the joint operation because it’s a national initiative.
