The African National Congress has announced that South Africa is withdrawing its membership from the International Criminal Court.
ANC NEC member, Obed Bapela, made the announcement on the final day of the National General Council in Midrand, north of Johannesburg.
Earlier this week, the ANC said it believed the court serves no purpose.
South Africa and the ICC are at loggerheads following the government’s failure to arrest Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir who was attending an African Union summit in Johannesburg.
Bapela says the ICC has lost its sense of direction.
President al-Bashir has been wanted by the ICC since 2009 on charges of crimes against humanity.
