‘Avengers 2’ Trailer Hints at Black Panther Presence

24 hours after the second trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron was released, fans have been rewatching the new footage with intense scrutiny, digging up a few more clues shown in the trailer. As we mentioned earlier today when discussing the two mysterious women who pop up in the footage, there appears to be a few references to the upcoming Phase Three movie Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman as the title character T’challa.

The actor himself teased that his character will be introduced in more than one upcoming Marvel movie aside from his previously confirmed appearance in next year’s Captain America: Civil War. Many fans thought that his cryptic statement could mean his character will be introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and as you can see from the clues below, that just may be the case. Here are the five Black Panther clues we spotted in the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer.

1Andy Serkis as…Ulysses Klaw?

Andy Serkis confirmed back in June that he has an on-camera role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, along with his work as a motion capture consultant for Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. While it has never been confirmed who the actor is playing, many speculated, after his brief appearance in the first trailer, the he is playing Ulysses Klaw, since his look matches the character from the comic. The actor popped up in the new trailer again, only this time we got yet another clue, with the actor sporting a claw necklace. Of course, this isn’t proof-positive confirmation that Andy Serkis is Ulysses Klaw, but it certainly is a very big hint.

2 The Mystery Cave Woman

Earlier today, we broke down several possibilities for the identity of this mysterious woman seen in a brief shot disrobing in a cave. Two of the three possibilities we mentioned for this character, a Dora Miljae warrior and T’challa’s sister Shuri, have roots in Black Panther’s homeland of Wakanda. If the unidentified woman is in fact Shuri, it could set up a battle between Black Panther’s sister and the aforementioned Ulysses Klaw, who, in the comic books, was responsible for the death of Black Panther and Shuri’s father.

3 The Cave Itself

Even if the mystery woman doesn’t have a connection to Wakanda, the cave itself is believed to be a Wakandan vibranium cave, which contains the metal used to make Captain America’s shield. Wakanda is one of the few places in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where vibranium is found. Naturally, we don’t know for sure if this is an actual vibranium cave, but it’s worth noting that, in the first trailer, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) was seen in a similar cave, leading to speculation that the mystery woman may be Death, who is connected to the Asgardian in the Marvel comics. It’s possible that something may happen in this cave that could set up Captain America: Civil War, where Black Panther is confirmed to appear.

4South Africa by Way of Wakanda?

Avengers Age of Ultron Africa Wakanda

Avengers: Age of Ultron is truly an international affair, with the production filming in several countries including Italy, the U.S., the U.K. and South Africa. When the South African shoot was first announced, many thought the country would be doubling for Wakanda, although that rumor was shot down in February, after it was reported that the production would shoot Johannesburg, South Africa as itself. The massive Hulk/Hulkbuster fight is set in South Africa, and one particular shot in the trailer showcases a sign for a South African restaurant franchise known as Nyama & Chips. Since it isn’t known why the Avengers stop over in South Africa, there is speculation that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes could be stopping there on the way to Wakanda. Of course, that hasn’t been confirmed, but it does lead one to wonder why they are in South Africa in the first place.

5 Quinjet In Wakanda?

One particularly interesting shot shows a Quinjet that appears to be flying over Wakanda, but it hasn’t been confirmed that this is actually Wakanda or not. However, as you can see in the image above, the scenery does bear a striking resemblence to the image from the comics above. Do you think it’s Wakanda? Or just another ruse to throw the fans off?

Avengers: Age of Ultron comes to theaters May 1st, 2015 and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Elizabeth Olsen, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Cobie Smulders, Jeremy Renner. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.
