Police officer shot, vehicle hijacked in Kempton Park

A group of people shot and wounded a police officer and hijacked his official car in Kempton Park on Monday morning, Gauteng police said.

Two patrolling police officers instructed the driver of a truck parked in Albatross Street to open the back after noticing its number plates did not match, Major Mack Mngomezulu said.

The driver claimed he could not open it and called another person who, when he arrived, tried to convince the police not to open the truck.

After forcing the driver to open the truck, six people sitting in the back opened fire, injuring one of the officers in the lower body.

The Star reported that they shot through the truck’s closed doors.

“The suspects and the truck driver jumped into the police bakkie and drove off with it for a few kilometres, where they hijacked a Honda Ballade and left the police bakkie,” Mngomezulu said.

No arrests had been made and cases of attempted murder and hijacking were being investigated.

The injured officer was in a stable condition in hospital.
