Tension was high in Nairobi’s Githurai 44 area as residents demanded that ‘Dr’ Mugo wa Wairimu be arrested and his clinic shut down.
Moments after the expose aired on Citizen TV on Sunday, residents moved to the clinic situated on the ground floor of a two storey building threatening to burn it.
Out of fear, tenants occupying other floors of the building called the police to stop the angry residents from setting the building on fire since they would also get affected.
“Last night, people came and they started stoning and even threatening to burn this building. We responded swiftly and came to control the crowd. You see if they burn the clinic, they will also injure other tenants,” one of the police officers guarding the building told Capital FM News on Monday.
Though police kept watch, the residents were still determined to have the clinic demolished.
“These stories are not new. Women have been complaining. We fear the clinic may not be shut down, that is why it is better for us to destroy it. We just be allowed to go in and remove those beds and computers,” one of the residents said.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentist Union (KMPPDU) and officials from the county visited Prestige Healthcare and expressed shock that the clinic was still operating despite having been shut down two months ago.
A member of the KMPPDU board in charge of inspection Dr Were Onyino said the board shut down Mugo’s clinic after it found that he was not qualified to operate it and that he did not have any basic training in the field.
“It was actually shut down on June 17. Today we actually came to arrest him because he was operating a clinic that is not licensed.”
Though most women shied away from speaking openly about the allegations, they said thorough investigations should be done to protect them from such dangerous doctors.
“As a woman I can tell you it scares me a lot. Sometimes we don’t have a choice that’s how we fall into such hands. Only the government can protect us; he should be arrested,” one of the residents said.
Earlier on Monday, Police said a manhunt had been launched to arrest ‘Dr’ Wairimu who is alleged to have been sedating and raping women at his two clinics in Zimmerman and Githurai.
The Director of Public Prosecutions asked for a speedy probe and file sent to him for perusal and further directions.
