The Eastern Cape High Court has dismissed Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s urgent application over a planned family meeting at Nelson Mandela’s Qunu home.
Madikizela-Mandela had asked the court to stop the meeting, organised by Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla, from taking place in the Eastern Cape. She has challenged her late ex-husband’s estate claiming Mandela’s property was given to her when he was imprisoned. Her lawyers have confirmed she has lost her bid to halt the planned family meeting for now.
The court has struck the activist’s application adding the executors of Mandela’s will had to be included in the application. The basis of her argument in court today was that she claims Mandla has no right to call the meeting at the Qunu property because it’s disrespectful to her. Although there are allegations that there may be violence if the meeting goes ahead, Mandla is adamant that it should go ahead at the end of this week.
Madikizela’s lawyers say they will re-apply for another before the end of this week.
